The Oil Free President Rally, Springfield MO
The Oil Free President rally hosted by MoveOn. on July 29th was quite interesting. It was held at the Conoco station at Benton and Kansas Expressway in exotic Springfield, MO.
The media had been contacted, and they didn't show up. Perhaps if we had said that a member of the Springfield Cardinals was coming or that there would be an appearance by Britney Spears fresh out of rehab they might have made it.But to quote my friend Midge, that would have been a lie. (I guess we should leave that up to the loyal opposition.)
The event was originally scheduled because John McCain was supposed to have had a fundraiser the following day, but it was cancelled. That's too bad.And just when his campaign was starting to gain momentum.
There were less than fifteen protestors there and a counter demonstrator holding a "Veterans 4 McCain" sign.(The representative of the local chapter , I'm guessing.) I tried to have a civil conversation with this guy, but he was right and we were all wrong. He thought he was intimidating us, but he actually succeeded in making a fool of himself.
The only "exciting" thing that happened was that the owner of the station called the police.Apparently nobody told him that we were having a rally there. Oops. The cop was pretty cool. He asked us if the McCain supporter was giving us any trouble, and I said no.Hell, personally, I thought he was great for comedy relief.
We held up signs stating how Exxon had purchased John McCain; one of "ours" had a banner in the form of gigantic check stating how much money the corporation had given to McCain(the creator of the banner was Midge Potts, who ran against Roy Blunt, the incumbent House Rep in 2006.)
I would like to think that a few people who saw us will be influenced at the polls.A lot of people honked at us, waved and all that good stuff. Then we had coffee.A perfect ending to a splendid evening.
